United Spirits Limited, abbreviated as USL, is a subsidiary of the British alcoholic beverages company Diageo, and is India's largest alcoholic beverages company. It was established in 1826 and is headquartered in Bangalore, India.
History
United Spirits was formed by the merger of several companies, the most notable of which was McDowell and Company. The company was acquired by Diageo in 2014, making it a part of one of the world's largest alcoholic beverage companies.
Products
United Spirits has a vast portfolio of brands across various categories including whisky, rum, vodka and brandy. Some of its popular brands include McDowell's No.1, Royal Challenge, and Black Dog Scotch Whisky.
Operations
United Spirits operates more than 50 manufacturing facilities across India and employs over 5000 people. The company also exports its products to more than 37 countries.
Controversies
United Spirits has been involved in several controversies, most notably involving its former chairman Vijay Mallya. Mallya was accused of financial irregularities and left India in 2016, leading to a significant impact on the company's reputation and operations.
