Columbia Pictures Television (CPT) is a former American television production and distribution company that was active from 1974 to 2001. It was a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc., which itself was a part of the Coca-Cola Company.
History
Columbia Pictures Television was established in 1974 as a result of the merger between Screen Gems, the television division of Columbia Pictures, and the television production company, Embassy Television. The merger aimed to consolidate the television production and distribution operations of both companies.
Throughout its existence, Columbia Pictures Television produced and distributed a wide range of television shows across various genres. Some of its notable productions include "The Jeffersons," "Diff'rent Strokes," "Who's the Boss?," "Married... with Children," and "Seinfeld."
In 1982, Columbia Pictures Television acquired the television rights to the library of the classic sitcom "I Love Lucy," which became a valuable asset for the company. The success of the show's syndication further solidified Columbia Pictures Television's position in the industry.
In 1989, Coca-Cola Company acquired Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc., including Columbia Pictures Television. The company continued to operate under the Columbia Pictures Television name until 2001 when it was rebranded as Columbia TriStar Television.
Legacy
Columbia Pictures Television played a significant role in shaping the landscape of American television during its existence. It produced and distributed numerous successful and influential shows that left a lasting impact on popular culture.
Many of the shows produced by Columbia Pictures Television continue to be syndicated and enjoyed by audiences worldwide. The company's library of television shows remains a valuable asset for its successor, Sony Pictures Television, which acquired the rights to the Columbia Pictures Television library.
