Chipsi mayai
Chipsi Mayai
Chipsi Mayai is a popular street food dish in Tanzania. It is a combination of French fries (chipsi) and an omelette (mayai). This dish is commonly found in local food stalls and is enjoyed by both locals and tourists.
Ingredients
To make Chipsi Mayai, you will need the following ingredients:
- 2 large potatoes, peeled and cut into thin French fries
- 4 eggs
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooking oil for frying
Preparation
1. Heat the cooking oil in a deep frying pan or skillet. 2. Fry the French fries until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and set them aside. 3. In a bowl, beat the eggs and season them with salt and pepper. 4. Add the chopped onion to the beaten eggs and mix well. 5. Heat a small amount of oil in a separate frying pan. 6. Pour the egg mixture into the pan and spread it evenly. 7. Cook the omelette on medium heat until it is set and golden brown on the bottom. 8. Carefully flip the omelette using a spatula and cook the other side until it is cooked through. 9. Once the omelette is cooked, place the French fries on top of it. 10. Fold the omelette over the French fries to create a sandwich-like shape. 11. Remove the Chipsi Mayai from the pan and cut it into slices.
Serving
Chipsi Mayai is typically served hot and can be enjoyed on its own or with a side of ketchup or chili sauce. It is often eaten as a quick and filling snack or as a main course.
Variations
There are several variations of Chipsi Mayai that can be found in different regions of Tanzania. Some variations include adding vegetables such as tomatoes, bell peppers, or green chilies to the omelette mixture. Others may include additional spices or herbs for added flavor.
