Catoctin AVA

The Catoctin AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a designated wine grape-growing region located in the state of Maryland, United States. It is situated in the northern part of the state, primarily within Frederick County. The AVA was established by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) on February 11, 2010.

Geography

The Catoctin AVA covers an area of approximately 92 square miles (238 square kilometers). It is named after the Catoctin Mountain range, which runs through the region. The AVA is characterized by its hilly terrain, with elevations ranging from 400 to 1,800 feet (122 to 549 meters) above sea level. The Catoctin Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, flows through the AVA, providing a source of water for irrigation.

Climate

The climate of the Catoctin AVA is classified as humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The region experiences a wide diurnal temperature variation, with warm days and cool nights during the growing season. This diurnal shift helps to preserve the acidity and flavor development in the grapes. The average annual rainfall in the AVA is around 40 inches (1,016 millimeters), which is beneficial for grape cultivation.

Grape Varieties

The Catoctin AVA is known for its production of both red and white grape varieties. Some of the popular red grape varieties grown in the region include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling are among the white grape varieties cultivated in the AVA. The diverse soil types, including shale, limestone, and granite, contribute to the unique characteristics of the wines produced in the Catoctin AVA.
