Brouwerij Van Steenberge is a Belgian brewery located in Ertvelde, a small town in the province of East Flanders. The brewery has a rich history dating back to 1784 when it was founded by Jean-Baptiste De Bruin. Over the years, it has gained a reputation for producing high-quality Belgian beers, many of which have won international awards.

History

The brewery was originally known as Brouwerij De Peer, named after the pear tree that stood in front of the brewery. In 1919, it was acquired by Paul Van Steenberge, who changed the name to Brouwerij Van Steenberge. Under his leadership, the brewery expanded its production and distribution, becoming one of the leading breweries in Belgium.

In the 1980s, Brouwerij Van Steenberge faced financial difficulties and was on the verge of bankruptcy. However, it was saved by Jozef Van Steenberge, the great-grandson of Paul Van Steenberge. Jozef modernized the brewery and introduced new brewing techniques, which helped revive the business.

Brouwerij Van Steenberge is known for its wide range of beers, each with its own unique flavor profile. Some of the most popular beers produced by the brewery include:

• Gulden Draak: A strong Belgian ale with a rich, malty flavor and hints of caramel and dark fruits. It is often described as a "quadruple" beer due to its high alcohol content.

• Piraat: A strong pale ale with a hoppy character and a slightly sweet taste. It is known for its complex flavors and high alcohol content.

• Augustijn: A Belgian abbey ale with a golden color and a fruity, spicy flavor. It is brewed using traditional methods and aged in oak barrels.

• Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale: A sour ale with a tart, fruity taste and a hint of oak. It is brewed using a unique blend of yeast and bacteria, giving it its distinctive flavor.

Brewery Tours

Brouwerij Van Steenberge offers guided tours of its brewery, allowing visitors to learn about the brewing process and the history of the brewery. During the tour, visitors can see the various stages of beer production, from the mashing of the grains to the fermentation and bottling.
