Lumisterol serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of vitamin D. After its formation in the skin, lumisterol is converted into previtamin D₃ through a thermal isomerization reaction. Previtamin D₃ then undergoes further transformations, including a thermal conversion to vitamin D₃. Vitamin D₃ is the biologically active form of vitamin D and plays a crucial role in various physiological processes.

Biological Functions

Vitamin D, derived from lumisterol, is essential for the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism. It promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestines, ensuring their availability for bone mineralization.
