Maple Grove is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. It is a suburb of Minneapolis and is part of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 71,066 as of the 2020 census, Maple Grove is the eighth-largest city in Minnesota.

Geography

Maple Grove is situated in the northern part of Hennepin County, approximately 17 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis. The city covers a total area of 35.03 square miles, of which 32.56 square miles is land and 2.47 square miles is water. The city is characterized by its numerous lakes, including Weaver Lake, Fish Lake, and Eagle Lake, which provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

History

Maple Grove was originally inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibwe Native American tribes. The area was later settled by European immigrants in the mid-19th century. The city's name is derived from the abundance of maple trees that once grew in the area.
