Pili Multigemini

Introduction

Pili multigemini, commonly referred to as compound hairs, is a hair follicle malformation. It is characterized by the presence of multiple hair shafts emerging from a single hair follicle. This condition is relatively rare and can occur in any hair-bearing area of the body.

Characteristics

Pili multigemini is identified by:

  • The growth of bifurcated or multiple hair shafts from a single follicle.
  • Each hair shaft having its own divided hair matrix and papilla.
  • Visibly thickened hairs, often mistaken for multiple hairs growing closely together.

Causes and Development

The exact cause of Pili multigemini remains unclear. It is thought to result from a developmental anomaly where the hair follicle becomes bifurcated, leading to the formation of multiple matrices and papillae.

Clinical Significance

While generally a benign condition, Pili multigemini can be associated with:

  • Cosmetic concerns, especially when occurring in visible areas.
  • Increased risk of ingrown hairs and folliculitis due to the thick nature of the hairs.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is typically made based on clinical appearance. Dermoscopy can aid in visualizing the multiple hair shafts emerging from a single follicle.

Management

Management of Pili multigemini primarily focuses on:

  • Cosmetic treatment, such as plucking, shaving, or waxing.
  • In cases of associated folliculitis, topical or oral antibiotics may be prescribed.

Epidemiology

The prevalence of Pili multigemini is not well-documented, with it being more commonly reported in males. It can occur at any age but is often noticed in adulthood.
