Povidone iodine

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. It may also be used for minor wounds. It is applied to the skin as a liquid or a powder. Povidone-iodine was discovered in 1955 at a division of BASF, and has since become a widely used medication around the world.

Composition and Mechanism of Action

Povidone-iodine is a complex of the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone, PVP) and elemental iodine. This complex slowly releases iodine, which has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, killing various types of bacteria, viruses, yeast, mold, and protozoa.

Uses

Povidone-iodine has a range of applications in the field of medicine:

• Pre-operative skin disinfection: Prior to surgical procedures, PVP-I is often used to cleanse the skin to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.
• Wound management: It can be used to treat minor cuts, burns, and abrasions. PVP-I's broad antimicrobial action helps prevent wound infections.
• Mucous membrane disinfection: PVP-I solutions are used for the disinfection of the oral and vaginal mucous membranes.

Safety and Side Effects

Povidone-iodine is generally safe for topical use. However, some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions. It should not be used in people with iodine hypersensitivity or thyroid disorders. Although PVP-I is usually safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers, it should be used cautiously under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Discontinued Brand: E-Z Prep

E-Z Prep was a brand of povidone-iodine products manufactured by Clinipad Corp. However, as of the current date, this particular brand appears to have been discontinued.
