KV Pharmaceutical
KV Pharmaceutical was an American drug company that was founded in 1942. It was known for producing both generic and non-generic medication. The company faced several controversies and legal issues, which eventually led to its bankruptcy in 2012.
History
KV Pharmaceutical was established in 1942 by the brothers Victor and Karen Voss. The company initially focused on the production of vitamins and mineral supplements. Over the years, the company expanded its product line to include both generic and non-generic drugs.
In the 1980s, KV Pharmaceutical began to face a series of legal issues. The company was accused of producing and selling misbranded and adulterated drugs. These legal issues culminated in a 2008 lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice, which resulted in a $27.6 million settlement.
Despite these challenges, KV Pharmaceutical continued to operate until 2012, when it filed for bankruptcy. The company's assets were eventually sold to Lumara Health, which later became part of AMAG Pharmaceuticals.
Products
KV Pharmaceutical produced a wide range of products, including both generic and non-generic drugs. Some of the company's most notable products included Ethyol, a drug used to reduce the side effects of radiation therapy, and Makena, a drug used to prevent preterm births.
Controversies
KV Pharmaceutical faced several controversies during its operation. The company was accused of producing and selling misbranded and adulterated drugs, which led to a series of legal issues. In 2008, the company was sued by the United States Department of Justice for these practices.
In 2011, KV Pharmaceutical faced further controversy when it increased the price of Makena from $10 to $1,500 per dose. This price increase led to widespread criticism and calls for regulatory intervention.
Legacy
Despite its controversies, KV Pharmaceutical made significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry. The company's products, particularly Ethyol and Makena, continue to be used in medical practice today.
