Kerryn Phelps

Kerryn Lyndel Phelps AM (born 14 December 1957) is an Australian medical practitioner and politician. She was the first woman to be elected president of the Australian Medical Association. In federal politics, Phelps was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Division of Wentworth from 20 October 2018 to 18 May 2019, representing the Kerryn Phelps Independents Day party.

Early life and education

Phelps was born in Sydney, New South Wales, and attended the University of Sydney, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1981. She later completed a Master of Medicine (MMed) in 1999 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2003, both at the same university.

Medical career

Phelps began her medical career as a resident at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. She later established her own general practice in the city's eastern suburbs. In 2000, she was elected president of the Australian Medical Association, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She served in the role until 2003.

Political career

Phelps entered politics in 2018, when she contested the Wentworth by-election as an independent candidate. She won the seat, previously held by former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and served as the MP for Wentworth until the 2019 federal election.

Personal life

Phelps is openly gay and has been married to her partner, Jackie Stricker-Phelps, since 1998. They have two children.
