Brora Distillery

Brora Distillery, also known as Clynelish Distillery, is a historic whisky distillery located in the village of Brora, Scotland. It was established in 1819 and has a rich history of producing high-quality Scotch whisky.

History

Brora Distillery was founded by the Marquess of Stafford, later known as the Duke of Sutherland, in 1819. The distillery was originally named Clynelish Distillery, after the nearby river. It was built to take advantage of the abundant supply of water from the Clynemilton Burn and the high-quality barley grown in the surrounding area.

Over the years, Brora Distillery gained a reputation for producing exceptional single malt whisky. Its whiskies were known for their robust and peaty character, which was a result of the local water source and the traditional production methods employed at the distillery.

Closure and Legacy

Unfortunately, Brora Distillery faced a series of challenges in the late 20th century. In 1967, a new Clynelish Distillery was built nearby to meet the increasing demand for whisky. As a result, Brora Distillery was closed in 1983 and its production ceased.

Despite its closure, Brora whiskies remain highly sought after by whisky enthusiasts and collectors. The distillery's limited edition releases are particularly prized, with bottles often commanding high prices at auctions.

Revival

In recent years, there have been efforts to revive Brora Distillery. In 2017, it was announced that the distillery would be reopened and production would resume. The revival project aims to restore the distillery to its former glory and continue the tradition of producing exceptional single malt whisky.
