Asahikawa is a city located in Hokkaido, Japan. It is the second-largest city in the northern island of Hokkaido, following Sapporo. Asahikawa is known for its zoo, Asahiyama Zoo, and for its ramen, Asahikawa Ramen.

History

Asahikawa was established in 1894. It was named after the Asahi River, which means "morning sun river" in Japanese. The city was originally a military and agricultural center, but it has since developed into a major industrial center in Hokkaido.
