Addis Ababa University (AAU) is a prominent public university located in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Established in 1950, it is the oldest and largest higher education institution in Ethiopia, playing a pivotal role in the country's educational and research landscape.

History

Addis Ababa University was originally founded as the University College of Addis Ababa in 1950 by a Canadian Jesuit, Lucien Matte, with the support of Emperor Haile Selassie. The university was initially affiliated with the University of London and offered courses in the arts and sciences.

In 1961, the institution was renamed Haile Selassie I University, and it became a full-fledged university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Following the Ethiopian Revolution in 1974, the university was renamed Addis Ababa University.
