The University of the Free State (UFS) is a public university located in Bloemfontein, the capital city of the Free State province in South Africa. Established in 1904, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the country.

History

The University of the Free State was founded in 1904 as the Grey College School with six students. It became a university in 1950 and was renamed the University of the Orange Free State. In 2001, the name was changed to the University of the Free State to reflect the new political and social landscape of South Africa.

Campuses

The university has three campuses:

  • The Bloemfontein Campus, which is the main campus and houses most of the university's faculties and administrative offices.
  • The South Campus, also located in Bloemfontein, which focuses on distance learning and open education.
  • The Qwaqwa Campus, located in the eastern Free State, which serves as a hub for rural education and development.

Academic Structure

UFS offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across its seven faculties:

  • Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of the Humanities

Notable Alumni

The university has produced many notable alumni, including politicians, academics, and business leaders. One of the most famous honorary degree recipients is Oprah Winfrey, who was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2011.
