Takeru Kobayashi
Takeru Kobayashi (小林 尊, Kobayashi Takeru, born March 15, 1978) is a Japanese competitive eater. He is best known for his participation in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, where he won six consecutive times.
Early Life
Kobayashi was born in Nagano, Japan. He began his competitive eating career while studying at Yokkaichi University, where he participated in a speed-eating contest and discovered his talent.
Competitive Eating Career
Kobayashi's competitive eating career began in earnest in 2001 when he won the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, setting a new world record by eating 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes. He went on to win the contest for six consecutive years, setting new records each time.
In addition to hot dogs, Kobayashi has set world records in eating a variety of foods, including hamburgers, sushi, and pizza. He has competed in the Major League Eating (MLE) circuit, as well as independent eating contests around the world.
Controversies
Kobayashi's career has not been without controversy. In 2010, he was arrested at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest for attempting to climb on stage after he was not allowed to compete due to a contract dispute with MLE. He has also been criticized for his eating techniques, which some argue give him an unfair advantage.
Personal Life
Kobayashi currently resides in New York City. Despite his competitive eating career, he maintains a slim physique through a rigorous exercise regimen and careful diet when not competing.
Legacy
Kobayashi is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of competitive eating. His success in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest helped to popularize the sport in the United States and around the world. His unique eating techniques, including the "Kobayashi Shake", have been emulated by many other competitive eaters.
