Magpas is a UK-based medical charity that provides life-saving care to patients in life-threatening emergencies in the East of England and beyond. The charity was founded in 1971 by two doctors, Dr. Derek Cracknell and Dr. Neville Silverston MBE. The name "Magpas" is an acronym for the Mid Anglia General Practitioner Accident Service.

History

Magpas was established in 1971 by Dr. Derek Cracknell and Dr. Neville Silverston MBE. The organization was initially run by local General Practitioners who volunteered their time to respond to emergencies in the community. Over the years, the service has evolved and expanded, and now includes a team of highly trained paramedics and doctors who provide advanced medical care at the scene of emergencies.

Services

Magpas provides a range of services, including:

  • Air Ambulance: The charity operates a dedicated air ambulance, known as the Magpas Air Ambulance, which is available 24/7. The helicopter is equipped with advanced medical equipment and is staffed by a team of experienced paramedics and doctors.
  • Emergency Medical Services: In addition to the air ambulance, Magpas also provides ground-based emergency medical services. These services are delivered by a team of specially trained and experienced paramedics and doctors.
  • Training and Education: Magpas is committed to improving patient care through training and education. The charity provides a range of training courses for healthcare professionals, including courses in pre-hospital care, trauma care, and emergency medical services.

Funding

As a charity, Magpas relies on donations from the public to fund its services. The charity does not receive any government funding and is entirely dependent on the generosity of its supporters.
