Nightwear
Nightwear, also known as sleepwear, is clothing designed to be worn while sleeping. The style of nightwear worn may vary with the seasons, with warmer styles being worn in colder conditions and vice versa. Some styles or materials are selected to be visually appealing or erotic in addition to their functional purposes.
History
Nightwear has evolved from the combined functions of loungewear and underwear. Before the mid-19th century, nightwear was practically non-existent. In the Western early Middle Ages, the shirt was the only piece of clothing used as nightwear. Its multi-purpose design was used not only as a nightgown but also as an undergarment in cold weather, a dressing gown, and even as a garment to be worn during the day.
Types of Nightwear
There are several types of nightwear that are commonly used today. These include:
- Nightgown - A loosely hanging item of nightwear, today almost exclusively worn by women. A nightgown is made from cotton, silk, satin, or nylon and may be decorated with lace appliqués or embroidery at the bust and hem.
- Nightshirt - A shirt meant to be worn while sleeping. It is usually longer and looser than a regular shirt.
- Pajamas - A garment for sleeping or lounging, consisting of a jacket or waistcoat and trousers
- Babydoll - A short, sometimes sleeveless, loose-fitting nightgown or negligee for women, generally designed to resemble a young girl's nightgown.
- Negligee - An often sheer and made of lightweight, flowing or clingy fabrics nightwear for women.
