Lapsana communis, commonly known as the nipplewort, is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to Europe and Asia but has also been introduced to North America.

Description

Lapsana communis is an annual or biennial plant that grows to a height of 30-80 cm. The leaves are alternate, with the lower ones being pinnatifid and the upper ones being entire. The flowers are small, yellow, and borne in loose clusters. The fruit is a small achene.

Distribution and habitat

Lapsana communis is native to Europe and Asia, but it has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America. It is commonly found in disturbed areas such as roadsides, fields, and waste places. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and can grow in both full sun and partial shade.

Uses

In traditional medicine, Lapsana communis has been used to treat various ailments. The leaves have been used as a poultice for wounds and inflammations, while the whole plant has been used as a diuretic and a laxative. However, scientific evidence to support these uses is lacking.

Cultivation

Lapsana communis is not commonly cultivated, but it can be grown from seed. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate a range of soil types and conditions.
