History
Before the founding of Cape Cod Hospital, the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod was established in 1916 to provide nursing services in the area. Injured fishermen would be sent to Boston for treatment until local businessmen initiated efforts to establish a hospital. Cape Cod Hospital was founded in 1920.
From the mid-1940s to 1971, the hospital was home to the Cape Cod Hospital School of Nursing, which trained local nurses.
In 1996, Cape Cod Hospital merged with Falmouth Hospital and the Visiting Nurse Association to form the unified Cape Cod Healthcare organization, which currently oversees Cape Cod Hospital.
Notable leaders of Cape Cod Hospital include James Lyons, who served as CEO from 1981 until the merger, and Steven Abbott, who served as CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare from 1998 to 2008. Dr. Richard F. Salluzzo, former CEO of Wellmont Health System, took over as CEO in 2008.
