Asbestos-related diseases are a group of illnesses that primarily affect the lungs and are caused by exposure to asbestos. These diseases include asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion. It has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation.

Asbestos-related diseases

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Prolonged exposure to these fibers can cause lung tissue scarring and shortness of breath. Asbestosis symptoms can range from mild to severe, and usually don't appear until many years after continued exposure.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that invades and obstructs the lung's air passages. People who have been exposed to asbestos and are also smokers are significantly more likely to develop lung cancer than just smokers.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the thin lining of the body's internal organs, most commonly the lungs. Almost all cases of mesothelioma are linked to asbestos exposure.

Prevention

Prevention of asbestos-related diseases involves identifying and reducing exposure to asbestos. This can be done by following safety guidelines when working with asbestos and having regular health check-ups to detect early signs of the diseases.

Treatment

Treatment for asbestos-related diseases depends on the specific disease and its stage. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these.
