VMware Fusion is a software hypervisor developed by VMware for macOS-based computers. It allows Intel-based Macs to run virtual machines with guest operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, and others, alongside their existing macOS installation.

History

VMware Fusion was first released in 2007 as a competitor to Parallels Desktop, another virtualization software for Mac. Over the years, VMware Fusion has evolved to include support for the latest macOS versions and features, such as Metal graphics acceleration, DirectX 11, and OpenGL 4.1.

Features

VMware Fusion provides a range of features that make it a popular choice for users who need to run multiple operating systems on a single Mac. Some of its key features include:

  • Unity Mode: This feature allows users to run Windows applications directly from the macOS desktop, seamlessly integrating them with macOS applications.
  • Snapshots and Clones: Users can take snapshots of their virtual machines to save their state at a particular point in time, and create clones for testing and development purposes.
  • Support for Multiple Displays: VMware Fusion supports multiple displays, allowing users to extend their virtual machines across multiple monitors.
  • Integration with VMware vSphere: Users can connect to VMware vSphere environments, allowing for the management of virtual machines across different platforms.

System Requirements

To run VMware Fusion, a Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better, and at least 4 GB of RAM, although 8 GB or more is recommended for optimal performance. The software is compatible with macOS versions from macOS Sierra (10.12) onwards.

Licensing

VMware Fusion is available in two editions: Fusion Player, which is free for personal use, and Fusion Pro, which includes additional features for advanced users and businesses. Both editions require a valid license key for activation.
