Ipas (organization)
Ipas (organization) is a global, non-profit health organization that works to increase women's ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights, with a particular focus on abortion rights. Ipas was founded in 1973, in the wake of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in the United States, which legalized abortion nationwide.
History
Ipas was established with the goal of providing safe abortion services in countries where abortion was, and often still is, heavily restricted. The organization's founders recognized the high rates of maternal mortality due to unsafe abortions and sought to address this public health crisis.
Work
Ipas works in multiple ways to improve women's access to safe abortion services. This includes advocating for policy change, training healthcare providers, and providing technical assistance to health systems. Ipas also conducts research to inform its work and to contribute to the global understanding of abortion-related issues.
Policy Advocacy
Ipas advocates for changes in policy and law that will improve women's access to safe abortion services. This includes working to decriminalize abortion, reduce barriers to access, and ensure that women's rights are respected in the provision of abortion care.
Training and Technical Assistance
Ipas provides training and technical assistance to healthcare providers and health systems to improve the quality and accessibility of abortion care. This includes training on safe abortion techniques, post-abortion care, and the use of medical abortion drugs.
Research
Ipas conducts and supports research on a range of abortion-related issues. This includes research on the incidence and consequences of unsafe abortion, the effectiveness of different abortion methods, and women's experiences with abortion care.
Impact
Ipas's work has had a significant impact on improving women's access to safe abortion services in many countries. The organization's efforts have contributed to policy changes, improved healthcare provider skills, and increased availability of safe abortion services.
