Daymare: 1998 is a third-person survival horror video game developed by the Italian studio Invader Studios and published by Destructive Creations and All in! Games. It was released for Microsoft Windows in September 2019, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions following in 2020. The game is a homage to the survival horror classics of the 1990s, particularly drawing inspiration from the original Resident Evil series. Daymare: 1998 features a multi-character storyline, where players control different protagonists, each with their own perspectives and abilities, as they navigate through a town ravaged by a deadly virus.

Gameplay

Daymare: 1998 is a survival horror game that emphasizes resource management, puzzle-solving, and combat. Players must manage their inventory carefully, conserving ammunition and health items to survive against the various enemies they encounter. The game also features environmental puzzles that players must solve to progress through the story. Combat in Daymare: 1998 involves both melee and ranged weapons, with a focus on strategic engagement rather than brute force.

Plot

The game is set in the fictional town of Keen Sight, located in the United States, in the year 1998. The story begins with an incident at a secret research facility that leads to the release of a deadly virus, transforming the town's inhabitants into aggressive, zombie-like creatures. Players take on the roles of Liev, an elite soldier; Samuel, a helicopter pilot; and Raven, a forest ranger. Each character has their own storyline that intertwines with the others, revealing different aspects of the narrative and the dark secrets behind the outbreak.

Development

Daymare: 1998 started as a fan-made remake of Resident Evil 2 before Capcom announced its official remake. Following a request from Capcom to cease development on the fan project, Invader Studios shifted their focus to creating an original game that would capture the spirit of classic survival horror games. The development team included members who had worked on previous horror titles, and they aimed to create a game that combined modern gameplay mechanics with the nostalgic feel of 1990s horror games.

Reception

Upon release, Daymare: 1998 received mixed reviews from critics. Praise was directed at its homage to classic survival horror games, atmosphere, and challenging gameplay. However, the game was criticized for its voice acting, technical issues, and some aspects of its design that were seen as outdated. Despite the mixed reception, Daymare: 1998 has garnered a cult following among fans of the survival horror genre.
