Spelman College is a private, historically black, women's liberal arts college located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Founded in 1881, it is part of the Atlanta University Center academic consortium in Atlanta. Spelman is renowned for its commitment to the education and empowerment of African American women and is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the United States.

History

Spelman College was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles, two teachers from Massachusetts. The school was established to provide education to African American women in the post-Civil War South. In 1884, the institution was renamed Spelman Seminary in honor of Laura Spelman Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, who was a significant benefactor of the school.

In 1924, the institution became Spelman College and began offering college degrees. Spelman has a long history of producing graduates who have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields, including civil rights, education, science, and the arts.
