The Hair Follicle Nevus is a rare dermatological condition characterized by the presence of multiple, small, hair-bearing papules. It is a type of hamartoma, a benign, focal malformation that resembles a neoplasm in the tissue of its origin. This condition is not a true neoplasm, but rather, it may occur at any site on the body, although the lesions are most commonly found on the face.

Clinical Presentation

Patients with Hair Follicle Nevus typically present with multiple, small, skin-colored or brown papules that contain a central hair. These lesions are usually less than 5mm in diameter and are often found on the face, although they can occur anywhere on the body. The condition is usually asymptomatic, but the lesions can sometimes cause cosmetic concern.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Hair Follicle Nevus is typically made based on the clinical presentation. A biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out other conditions. Histologically, the lesions show an increased number of hair follicles, often with a perifollicular fibrous sheath.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for Hair Follicle Nevus. The lesions are benign and do not require treatment unless they cause cosmetic concern. In such cases, they can be removed by surgical excision, laser therapy, or cryotherapy.

Epidemiology

Hair Follicle Nevus is a rare condition. The exact prevalence is unknown, but it is thought to occur more commonly in males than in females. The condition usually presents in childhood or early adulthood.
