Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a private research university located in Troy, New York. Established in 1824, RPI is the oldest technological university in the United States. The institute offers degrees in engineering, science, information technology, architecture, management, and the humanities, arts, and social sciences.
History
RPI was founded in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton for the purpose of instructing students "in the application of science to the common purposes of life." The institute's first classes were held on the second floor of the Old Bank Place in Troy. Over the years, RPI has grown significantly, expanding its campus and academic offerings.
Campus
The RPI campus is situated on a 275-acre hill overlooking the city of Troy and the Hudson River. The campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Jonsson-Rowland Science Center.
Academics
RPI is organized into five schools:

The institute is known for its rigorous academic programs and emphasis on research. RPI is home to several research centers and institutes, including the Rensselaer Nanotechnology Center, the Center for Future Energy Systems, and the Lighting Research Center.
Student Life
RPI has a vibrant student life with over 200 student organizations, including Greek life, club sports, and student government. The institute's athletic teams, known as the RPI Engineers, compete in the NCAA Division III and are members of the Liberty League.
