Spelman College is a private, historically black women's college located in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1881, it is part of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and has a longstanding reputation for academic excellence and social activism.

History

Spelman College was founded on April 11, 1881, as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles. The school was established in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta. In 1884, the institution was renamed Spelman Seminary in honor of Laura Spelman Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, who was a significant benefactor.

Academics

Spelman College offers a variety of undergraduate programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and social sciences.
