Mark Birley
Mark Birley (29 May 1930 – 24 August 2007) was a prominent English entrepreneur and socialite, best known for founding some of London's most exclusive private members' clubs, including Annabel's, Mark's Club, and Harry's Bar. He was a significant figure in the British social scene and left a lasting legacy in the hospitality industry.
Early Life
Mark Birley was born in London, England, to Sir Oswald Birley, a celebrated portrait painter, and Rhoda Birley, a society beauty. He was educated at Eton College and later attended University College, Oxford, where he studied History.
Career
Birley's career began in the art world, where he worked as an art dealer. However, he soon shifted his focus to the hospitality industry. In 1963, he founded Annabel's, a private members' club in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, named after his then-wife, Lady Annabel Goldsmith. The club quickly became a favorite among celebrities, royalty, and the British elite.
Following the success of Annabel's, Birley went on to establish several other exclusive venues:
- Mark's Club in 1972, a private dining club in Mayfair.
- Harry's Bar in 1979, an Italian restaurant and bar in Mayfair.
- George in 2001, a private members' club in Mayfair.
Personal Life
Mark Birley married Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart in 1954, and they had three children: Rupert Birley, Robin Birley, and India Jane Birley. The couple divorced in 1975. Birley was known for his impeccable taste and style, which was reflected in the design and ambiance of his clubs.
Legacy
Mark Birley's contributions to the hospitality industry have had a lasting impact. His clubs set a standard for exclusivity and luxury, influencing the design and operation of private members' clubs worldwide. After his death in 2007, his son Robin Birley continued his legacy by managing and expanding the family business.
