Holistic Dentistry is a field of dentistry which considers the patient's overall health and wellness, in addition to their dental health. It is also known as biological dentistry, biocompatible dentistry, alternative dentistry, unconventional dentistry, or biologic dentistry.

Philosophy

The philosophy of holistic dentistry is that the mouth is not an isolated organ, but an integrated part of the body. It emphasizes the use of non-toxic restoration materials, and focuses on the unrecognized impact that dental toxins and dental infections may have on overall health.

Practices

Holistic dentistry advocates will often encourage the removal of mercury amalgam fillings, non-surgical approaches to gum disease, and the use of fluoride. They argue that the use of these substances and procedures may have harmful effects on the body.

Criticism

Critics of holistic dentistry argue that the field lacks scientific validation, and that the safety and effectiveness of many of its therapies are unproven. The American Dental Association does not recognize holistic dentistry as a specialty.
