John Karefa-Smart

John Karefa-Smart (26 June 1915 – 25 August 2010) was a Sierra Leonean politician and medical doctor. He was the leader of the United National People's Party and the first Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone.

Early life and education

Karefa-Smart was born in Rotifunk, Sierra Leone to Mende parents. He attended Albert Academy in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He later studied at Fourah Bay College and then at the University of London, where he earned a degree in Medicine.

Career

After his studies, Karefa-Smart worked as a medical doctor in Sierra Leone. He later joined the World Health Organization (WHO) and worked in various capacities. He was the first African to hold the position of Assistant Director-General at the WHO.

In 1957, Karefa-Smart entered politics and was elected to the Sierra Leone House of Representatives. He served as the Minister of Lands and Housing, Minister of Defense, and the first Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone.

Later life and death

Karefa-Smart retired from politics in 2002. He died on 25 August 2010 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
