Franciscus Sylvius (1614–1672) was a Dutch physician and scientist who was one of the earliest defenders of the preformation theory, the idea that all organisms were created at the same time, and that succeeding generations grow from homunculi, or animalcules, that have been encased in the reproductive organs of their parents. He is also known for his work in the field of medicine, particularly for his development of a medicinal tonic known as Dutch gin.
