Jumaane Williams
Jumaane D. Williams (born May 11, 1976) is an American politician and activist who has served as the New York City Public Advocate since 2019. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to Grenadian immigrant parents. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Brooklyn College, followed by a Master of Arts degree in urban policy and administration.
Political Career
Williams began his political career as a member of the New York City Council, representing the 45th district from 2009 to 2019. During his tenure, he was known for his advocacy on issues such as affordable housing, police reform, and gun control.
In 2019, Williams was elected as the New York City Public Advocate, succeeding Letitia James, who became the Attorney General of New York. As Public Advocate, Williams has focused on issues such as tenant rights, police accountability, and public health.
Activism
Williams is known for his activism and has been involved in various movements, including the Black Lives Matter movement. He has been a vocal advocate for social justice and has participated in numerous protests and demonstrations.
Personal Life
Williams has been open about his struggles with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Tourette syndrome. He uses his platform to raise awareness about these conditions and to advocate for mental health support.
