Penang

Penang is a state located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is made up of two parts, Penang Island, where the capital city, George Town, is located, and Seberang Perai on the Malay Peninsula. Known as the "Silicon Valley of the East" for its industries, Penang is one of Malaysia's most vital economic powerhouses.

History

Penang was part of the Malay Sultanate of Kedah until 1786, when Captain Francis Light managed to negotiate the island away from the Sultanate and turn it into a British colony. It was later merged with Malacca and Singapore to form the Straits Settlements in 1826.

Economy

Penang's economy is diverse and robust, with services, manufacturing, and tourism forming significant sectors. The state is home to one of the largest electronics manufacturing areas in Malaysia, earning it the nickname "Silicon Valley of the East".
