Cirebonese people are an ethnic group centered in the city of Cirebon and its surrounding area in the western part of the Java Island, Indonesia. They are a blend of Sundanese, Javanese, Chinese, Arab, and Indian cultures due to the strategic location of Cirebon as a port.

History

The Cirebonese people's history is closely related to the establishment of Cirebon Sultanate, one of the Islamic kingdoms in Java. The sultanate was founded in the 15th century, and its rulers played a significant role in the spread of Islam in West Java.

Language

The Cirebonese people speak Cirebonese, a dialect that is a mixture of Javanese and Sundanese. The language also has influences from Arabic, Chinese, and Dutch due to historical interactions.

Culture

Cirebonese culture is a blend of Javanese and Sundanese traditions, with distinct influences from Chinese, Arab, and Indian cultures. This is evident in their traditional arts such as Wayang Kulit Purwa, Topeng dance, and Gamelan music. The Batik Cirebon is a famous product of the Cirebonese people, known for its vibrant colors and unique patterns.

Cuisine

Cirebonese cuisine is rich and varied, with dishes like Empal Gentong, a spicy beef soup, and Nasi Jamblang, a buffet-style rice dish, being popular. The city of Cirebon is also known for its seafood dishes, thanks to its coastal location.

Religion

The majority of Cirebonese people practice Islam, which was introduced to the area in the 15th century by the rulers of the Cirebon Sultanate. There are also small communities of Christians, Buddhists, and those who follow traditional Javanese spiritual practices.
