Rajshahi
Rajshahi is a metropolitan city, and a major urban, commercial and educational centre of Bangladesh. It is also the administrative seat of eponymous division and district. Located on the north bank of the Padma River, near the Bangladesh-India border, the city has a population of over 763,952 residents.
History
The region of Rajshahi was a part of the Pundra Kingdom of ancient Bengal. It was known as "Rampur Boalia". The origin of its name can be traced back when the region was a dense forest and had many Rajah's and Maharajah's living.
Geography
Rajshahi is located at 24.3667°N 88.6000°E. It has an average elevation of 18 metres (59 feet). The city is located on the alluvial plains of the Padma River, which runs through southern Rajshahi.
Economy
The economy of Rajshahi is dependent upon agriculture and small industries. The city is known for its famous Mango and Silk production. The city is also home to many educational institutions and a vibrant cultural life.
Education
Rajshahi is known as the "Silicon Valley of Bangladesh" due to the presence of many educational institutions and the highest number of computer and IT related industry. The city is home to the Rajshahi University, which is the second largest university in Bangladesh.
Culture
Rajshahi is known for its cultural activities, such as the Rajshahi Silk, which is a major part of the city's economy and culture. The city is also known for its mangoes, which are exported to many countries.
