Taverna
Taverna
Taverna is a domain-independent suite of tools used to design and execute scientific workflows. It is a project within the Apache Software Foundation and is widely used in the bioinformatics community.
History
Taverna was initially developed by the myGrid team as part of the UK e-Science programme. The first version was released in 2003. Since then, it has been adopted by a wide range of scientific communities worldwide.
Features
Taverna provides a visual programming environment for the design of workflows. It supports a wide range of services, including SOAP and RESTful web services, BioMart, BioMoby, and R scripts. Taverna also includes a provenance system to track the data used and produced by workflows.
Workflow Design
In Taverna, workflows are designed using the Taverna Workbench. This is a graphical user interface that allows users to drag and drop services onto a canvas and then connect them together. The Workbench also provides a range of tools for managing and executing workflows.
Execution Engine
Taverna workflows are executed by the Taverna Engine. This is a standalone Java application that can be run from the command line or embedded in other applications. The Engine is responsible for managing the execution of workflows, including the invocation of services and the handling of data.
Provenance
Taverna includes a provenance system that tracks the data used and produced by workflows. This allows users to trace the origin of results and to reproduce workflows. The provenance system is based on the Open Provenance Model and is compatible with other provenance tools.
Community
Taverna has a large and active community of users and developers. The Taverna website provides a range of resources, including documentation, tutorials, and a forum. The Taverna project also organises regular workshops and webinars.
