Hospira is a global pharmaceutical and medical device company with headquarters in Lake Forest, Illinois. It was formerly a part of the Hospital Products division of Abbott Laboratories, but spun off into an independent company in 2004. Hospira's products are used by hospitals and alternate site providers, such as clinics, home healthcare providers and long-term care facilities. The company was purchased by Pfizer in September 2015.

History

Hospira was created in 2004 when Abbott Laboratories spun off its hospital products division. At the time of its spin-off, Hospira had sales of $2.5 billion and 14,000 employees. Hospira's name was derived from the words hospital, spirit, inspire and the Latin word spero, which means hope.

In September 2015, Hospira was acquired by Pfizer, one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. The acquisition was valued at approximately $17 billion.

Products

Hospira manufactures injectable pharmaceutical drugs, which are sold in individual doses, as well as infusion technologies. The company's drug portfolio includes both specialty and generic injectable drugs in a variety of delivery systems, including prefilled syringes and vials.

Hospira's infusion technologies, sold worldwide, include the Plum A+™ and Symbiq™ systems, which are designed to meet the safety and workflow demands of the 21st century hospital environment.

Controversies

Hospira has faced several controversies over the years, including issues related to product quality and manufacturing practices. The company has also been involved in legal disputes related to drug pricing and patent infringement.
