Extraterrestrial life
Extraterrestrial life refers to life that originates outside of Earth. It is the subject of astrobiology, and its existence remains hypothetical due to the lack of empirical evidence.
Definition
Extraterrestrial life is defined as life that does not originate from Earth. It is often referred to as alien life, or simply aliens (not to be confused with the term as used in immigration law), and is a central theme in works of science fiction.
Hypothesis
The Drake equation speculates about the existence of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. The science of astrobiology considers life on Earth as well, and in the broader astronomical context. In 2015, "remains of biotic life" were found in 4.1 billion-year-old rocks in Western Greenland, once the Haughton crater in the Nunavut area of the Canadian Arctic; as well as "remains of biotic life" found in 4.1 billion-year-old rocks in Western Australia.
Search for extraterrestrial life
The search for extraterrestrial life includes scientific research and theories about the possibilities of life on other planets, including Earth. Theories suggest that life may exist in various forms, from potential microbes within the Solar System to hypothetical sophisticated civilizations in other galaxies.
