Htanthi mont (Burmese: ထန်းသီးမုန့်; pronounced [tʰáɴðímo̰ʊɴ], lit. 'toddy palm cake') is a traditional Burmese snack or mont. It bears resemblance to the Chinese fa gao.

Etymology

The term "Htanthi mont" is derived from the Burmese language, where "Htanthi" refers to the toddy palm and "mont" means cake. The literal translation of "Htanthi mont" is "toddy palm cake".

Description

Htanthi mont is a type of cake made from the fruit of the toddy palm. It is a popular snack in Burma and is often served at traditional Burmese festivals and celebrations. The cake is similar in texture and taste to the Chinese fa gao, a type of steamed sponge cake.

Preparation

The preparation of Htanthi mont involves the use of toddy palm fruit, rice flour, sugar, and yeast. The toddy palm fruit is first mashed into a pulp and then mixed with the other ingredients to form a batter. This batter is then steamed until it rises and becomes fluffy. The resulting cake is sweet and has a unique flavor that is characteristic of the toddy palm fruit.

Cultural Significance

Htanthi mont holds a significant place in Burmese culture. It is often served during traditional Burmese festivals and celebrations, and is a common snack found in local markets and street food stalls. The cake is also often given as a gift during special occasions.
