P2RY4 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the P2RY4 gene. This protein is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family, which are integral membrane proteins that possess seven transmembrane domains.

Function[edit]

The P2RY4 gene encodes a receptor for uridine diphosphate (UDP) glucose and UDP galactose. It is one of the several different receptors that respond to extracellular nucleotides. This receptor may be involved in a number of physiological processes such as immune response and differentiation of bone marrow-derived cells.

Clinical significance[edit]

Mutations in the P2RY4 gene have been associated with a number of diseases. For example, it has been suggested that variations in this gene may be associated with susceptibility to diabetes mellitus type 2.
