Terminology is the study of terms and their use. Terms are words and compound words or multi-word expressions that in specific contexts are given specific meanings.

Definition[edit]

Terminology is a discipline that systematically studies the "labelling or designating of concepts" particular to one or more subject fields or domains of human activity. It does this through the research and analysis of terms in context for the purpose of documenting and promoting consistent usage.

Terminology science[edit]

Terminology science is a branch of linguistics studying special vocabulary. It is a part of the science of information. It is related to, but distinct from lexicography, and indeed there is some disagreement among scholars as to which is the parent of which in the relationship.

Terminology standardization[edit]

Terminology standardization is the process of developing, promoting and using terminology standards. These standards are developed by terminology standardization bodies like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Terminology work[edit]

Terminology work is a set of activities associated with the collection, description and presentation of terms. It includes term selection, conceptual work, term formation, term definition, term explanation, and term coordination.
