Urtica massaica is a species of plant in the family Urticaceae. It is endemic to Kenya and is commonly known as the Massai Nettle. The plant is known for its stinging hairs that can cause irritation when touched.

Description[edit]

The Urtica massaica is a perennial plant that grows up to 1.5 meters tall. The leaves are opposite, ovate to lanceolate, and have serrated edges. The plant has both male and female flowers on the same plant (monoecious). The flowers are small and greenish, arranged in axillary clusters. The fruit is a small, dry, one-seeded capsule.

Distribution and Habitat[edit]

The Urtica massaica is found in the highland areas of Kenya, particularly in the Rift Valley Province. It grows in moist, shady areas, often along riverbanks and in forest understory.

Uses[edit]

The leaves of the Urtica massaica are used by the Massai people for medicinal purposes. They are also used as a vegetable and are sometimes fed to livestock.

Conservation Status[edit]

The Urtica massaica is not currently listed as threatened or endangered. However, like many plant species, it may be affected by habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion.
