Obduction is a geological process in which oceanic lithosphere is thrust or moved over the edge of continental lithosphere. This process is relatively rare compared to subduction, where the oceanic lithosphere is forced under the continental lithosphere or another oceanic plate. Obduction plays a crucial role in the formation of ophiolites, which are sections of the oceanic crust and the underlying upper mantle that have been uplifted and exposed above sea level and often emplaced onto continental crust.
