LRP1

LRP1, also known as Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LRP1 gene. It is a member of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL receptor) family.

Function[edit]

LRP1 is an endocytic receptor that is involved in several cellular processes, including lipoprotein metabolism, activation of lysosomal enzymes, activation of lipoprotein lipase, and signal transduction. It is also involved in the clearance of amyloid-beta peptide, a substance that accumulates in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

Clinical significance[edit]

Mutations in the LRP1 gene have been associated with atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, LRP1 has been implicated in the regulation of blood-brain barrier integrity and the transport of various molecules across the blood-brain barrier.
