Bromethenmadinone acetate is a steroidal antiandrogen that was never marketed. It is a synthetic and steroidal compound of the 19-nortestosterone group that was developed in the 1960s. Bromethenmadinone acetate is related to nomegestrol acetate and segesterone acetate, which are used in medicine as progestogens in hormonal contraception and hormone therapy.
Chemistry[edit]
Bromethenmadinone acetate, also known as 17α-acetoxy-6α-bromo-19-norprogesterone, is a synthetic 19-nortestosterone derivative and a steroidal antiandrogen. It is structurally related to other 19-nortestosterone derivatives like nomegestrol acetate and segesterone acetate.
Pharmacology[edit]
As a steroidal antiandrogen, bromethenmadinone acetate acts as an antagonist of the androgen receptor, the biological target of androgens like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. It has been found to possess strong antiandrogenic activity in animal studies.
History[edit]
Bromethenmadinone acetate was developed in the 1960s but was never marketed. It is one of the few steroidal antiandrogens that was not introduced for medical use.
