inXile Entertainment is an American video game developer based in Newport Beach, California. The company was founded in 2002 by Brian Fargo, who was previously the founder of Interplay Entertainment. inXile Entertainment is known for developing role-playing games (RPGs) and has a reputation for creating games with deep narratives and engaging gameplay.
History[edit]
Brian Fargo founded inXile Entertainment in 2002 after leaving Interplay Entertainment. The company initially focused on developing games for the PC and console markets. One of their early projects was "The Bard's Tale", a remake of the classic 1985 game of the same name.
In 2012, inXile Entertainment launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the development of "Wasteland 2", a sequel to the 1988 game "Wasteland". The campaign raised over $2.9 million, making it one of the most successful video game crowdfunding projects at the time. "Wasteland 2" was released in 2014 to critical acclaim.
Following the success of "Wasteland 2", inXile continued to use crowdfunding to support their projects. They launched another successful Kickstarter campaign for "Torment: Tides of Numenera", a spiritual successor to the classic RPG "Planescape: Torment". The game was released in 2017 and received positive reviews for its storytelling and world-building.
In 2018, inXile Entertainment was acquired by Microsoft and became part of Xbox Game Studios. This acquisition provided the company with additional resources and support to develop new projects.
