Hemant Karkare

Hemant Karkare (12 December 1954 – 26 November 2008) was a senior Indian Police officer who served as the chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad. Karkare was killed in action during the 2008 Mumbai attacks, where he was leading the Mumbai police's response against the terrorists. His bravery and leadership during the attacks were widely praised, and he became a symbol of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

Early Life and Education

Hemant Karkare was born on 12 December 1954. He pursued his higher education in engineering and obtained a degree from the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur. Karkare then joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1982, choosing to serve his country through its law enforcement.

Career

Throughout his career, Karkare held various positions within the Indian police force. Before being appointed as the head of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Maharashtra, he worked in the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India's external intelligence agency, on a deputation basis. His tenure at RAW equipped him with valuable insights into counter-terrorism operations and intelligence work.

As the chief of the ATS, Karkare was instrumental in investigating and cracking down on terrorist activities within Maharashtra. One of his notable investigations was into the 2006 Malegaon bombings, where his team uncovered evidence leading to the arrest of suspects linked to extremist groups.

2008 Mumbai Attacks

On 26 November 2008, Mumbai was subjected to a series of coordinated terrorist attacks, which came to be known as the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Karkare quickly mobilized the ATS and Mumbai police forces to respond to the attacks. He personally led the operation against the terrorists at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, one of the primary sites under siege.

Tragically, Karkare was killed in action while fighting the terrorists. His death was a significant loss to the nation and the police force. The bravery and dedication he displayed were widely recognized, both nationally and internationally.
