Fremont is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It was incorporated on January 23, 1956, from the merger of five smaller communities: Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs. The city is named after the American explorer John C. Frémont.

History[edit]

The area now known as Fremont was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people. The first European settlement in the area was Mission San José, established in 1797 by Spanish missionaries. The area remained largely agricultural until the mid-20th century when it began to develop rapidly as part of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Geography[edit]

Fremont is located in the southeastern section of the San Francisco Bay Area, straddling the East Bay and South Bay regions. The city covers an area of approximately 90 square miles (233 km²).
