Balconing is a term that originated in Spain, referring to the act of jumping into a swimming pool from a balcony or falling from height while attempting such acts. This activity is often associated with alcohol consumption and has resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities, particularly among tourists.

Origin[edit]

The term "balconing" was coined in Spain, where the activity has been most prevalent. It is a combination of the words "balcony" and "diving". The practice gained notoriety in the late 2000s and early 2010s, particularly in tourist areas such as Mallorca and Ibiza.

Incidents and Consequences[edit]

Balconing incidents often involve young tourists and are frequently associated with excessive alcohol consumption. The consequences of balconing can be severe, including serious injury and death. In response to the number of incidents, local authorities and hotel owners have implemented measures to discourage the practice, such as fines and eviction from hotels.

Prevention[edit]

Efforts to prevent balconing include public awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of alcohol consumption laws, and architectural modifications to hotels. Some hotels have also introduced fines for guests found to be participating in balconing.
